SMEs show lack of faith in coalition promises

Small businesses in the UK are far from confident in the Government’s ability to cut red tape, according to a new survey.

Small businesses in the UK are far from confident in the Government’s ability to cut red tape, according to a new survey.

Research carried out by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) found that just 28 per cent believe the coalition government will make a noticeable difference when it comes to cutting bureaucracy for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) such as those trading on eBay.

A report into the survey’s findings by eGov Monitor also said 89 per cent of respondents were of the view that politicians have little understanding of how rules and regulations actually affect small businesses in the UK.

Last week saw Lord Young of Graffham appointed as the government’s new enterprise advisor and part of his role will be to ease the regulatory burden on SMEs. It would appear that small firms, such as those trading on eBay and Amazon offering cheap delivery through worldwide parcel services, do not have as much confidence in Lord Young as the Prime Minister, according to the FSB.
