Sending a parcel to Australia could be a lot easier after an app for iPhone and iPad users has been launched.

The new "post office in your pocket" app from Australia Post offers a range of tools which make tracking your parcel to Australia more simple.

The app topped the Most Downloaded Free Apps chart, within hours of going live.

Customers are clearly enthusiastic about the ability to track postal items, search for a postcode, and locate a post office in Australia.

The app even makes paying a bill all possible "anywhere, anytime".
Australia Post reckons the success of postal iPhone apps in other countries is sign of the potential for this app.

Australia Post's Internet and Contact Centre general manager Brady Jacobsen said: "When French postal organisation Le Poste launched their iPhone app on April 19th it was downloaded 75,000 times on the first day."

He added that he expects Australian customers to take to the technology with equal enthusiasm.
