The MP for the Orkney and Shetland Islands, Alistair Carmichael has spoken of his concern that parcel delivery services, may soon not be available for every home address.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Carmichael insisted that daily services must be maintained.
He expressed concerns regarding the number of licenses issued for door-to-door deliveries by private services.
As these businesses have no obligation to serve isolated rural areas, they instead often focus their efforts on the urban areas which are more densely populated, and hence more profitable.
Mr Carmichael was speaking during Questions for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Business minister Pat McFadden responded by saying he is determined to keep the universal services, as they are an important part of the social glue of the nation.
