Step van drivers delivering a parcel to USA businesses and homes are some of the safest around.

This is the view of FedEx Express director of safety, health and fire protection Steve Mugno.

He pointed out the qualities of this oft-undervalued truck class in his latest post on the company's blog.

He explained that step van driving is often the first rung on the truck industry carrier ladder, adding that the class consistently manages to prove their mettle, skill and professionalism.

Mr Mugno wrote: "Only a skilled and vigilant driver can navigate a route in all weather and road conditions in a vehicle that's six to eight times larger than a minivan."

He mentioned this year's National Truck Driving Championship competition as an indication of the quality of FedEx's drivers.

The firm saw six FedEX courier USA drivers walk away with national championship titles, including step van driver Sean Saxon.
