Wimborne residents sign petition for new post office services

Petition for post office facilitiesTown residents are campaigning for post office facilities to be returned to their town.

People from Dorset who were left having to seek out post office alternatives following a fire have been signing a petition to get facilities returned to their town.

A blaze in June saw post office facilities in Wimborne removed after it damaged the newsagents which housed them, reports the Bournemouth Echo.

East Dorset District Council claims that health and safety concerns mean the site remains cordoned off, however plans were outlined for new temporary facilities to be given to the town.

This would take at least 12 months to launch, which would leave locals still having to seek for parcel delivery alternatives for that period.

Some 2,654 people have signed a petition to reinstate post office services in Wimborne to date, which is equivalent to one signature per household in the town centre.

Robin Cook, local councillor, told the newspaper: "There is no excuse for the delay to which the people and business owners of Wimborne are being subjected."

Kempsey Parish Council recently agreed to provide funding to establish a new post office in the village, the Berrows Journal reported.
