Twitter is not as big as the hype may suggest, it is claimed.

Businesses using a courier delivery service may find certain types of social media are more valuable as advertising tools than others.

Microblogging - essentially the practice of tweeting using the networking site Twitter - is still "extremely niche" across Europe, according to Global Web Index, which carries out studies of social media.

This is despite all the hype surrounding Twitter, explained the firm's managing director, who said that the microblogging site "appeals to a certain audience".

Speaking at the Internet Advertising Bureau online branding and social media workshop, he added:"If we look at the last 12 months in Europe as we can see, we often think of the web moving extremely quickly but actually the market now is extremely mature."

Face book appears to be something quite different, after a recent survey from AT Internet found that links to French news websites were 13 times more likely to be clicked on when on the site than if they were posted on Twitter.
