The potential for the online retail sector to continue to grow is massive, it has been claimed.

An expert has claimed that the online retail sector still has "an enormous amount" of growth potential.

David Smith, director of operations at intelligence firm IMRG, has claimed that predictions suggest the total number of online sales in the UK will be up by 15 per cent year-on-year during 2009, which may lead to an increase in domestic parcel deliveries.

However, he added that as research from the Office of Fair Trading has shown some people are wary of shopping over the web, there is still a chance that the area could grow further if online retailers improve their work.

"It's anywhere between ten and twenty per cent of overall retail that is done online," he explained.

"A lot of the retailers, are getting very much involved in making their sites a lot more safe."
