Spicing up TV with social media

Spicing up TV with social mediaUAE TV viewers are adapting to social media.

TV watchers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are leading the way when it comes to using social media to talk about a particular programme with friends, a new report has found.

While the benefits of maintaining a social presence for retailers working with parcel delivery firms has been made abundantly clear recently - Gartner predicted a fifth of business users will prefer it to email by 2014 - this study indicates how important Web 2.0 technology is for broadcasters as well.

Roughly 60 per cent of viewers in the UAE said they talk about programmes on social media, Motorola Mobility's 2010 Media Engagement Barometer found.

Although this total was behind China (70 per cent) and Russia (66 per cent), over two-thirds (67 per cent) of the UAE viewers said they engaged with social media either frequently or very frequently - the highest combined percentage of the survey.

Alper Turken from Motorola Mobility said the UAE results show that "innovations around integrating social media functionality will certainly find favour with viewers, and this should encourage the development and deployment of new services in the region".
