Econsultancy has released a step-by-step guide for those keen to begin using parcel delivery services and selling items on the internet.

While the advice is aimed at small and medium sized firms, many of the pointers could also be useful for people looking to start up their own online parcel delivery firm.

Top of the list is not to be afraid to start small. The firm noted that while "major online" players such as eBay and Amazon "process billions of pounds", it is important to not feel like a business has to be big right from the off.

Deciding what you're going to sell and how you're going to sell it are two more important factors to setting up an online firm, Econsultancy said.

"Talk to several potential suppliers and work with your team to develop a bulletproof brief. By detailing precisely what is required you will greatly increase the probability of project success," the firm recommended.

In its marketplace, eBay offers market research showing trends for online sales, which could be worth a look for those keen to start an online firm.
