The government must do more to support the post office network across the UK, according to a Scottish MP.

A Scottish Liberal Democrat MP has called on the government to provide more support to the post office network.

Commenting after the Business and Enterprise Select Committee published a report claiming ministers had failed to improve the efficiency of postal services, Michael Moore said customers deserve better.

He claimed that the government has "hacked away" at the Post Office network and many communities have "lost out" as a result.

"Ministers must recognise that the network is an essential public service, especially in rural areas like the Borders, and start treating it as such," he added.

The Conservative party recently revealed plans to introduce new guidelines that could see many rural post offices saved from closure in the UK, which could stop people from seeking parcel delivery alternatives.
