Royal Mail workers vote for strike action

CWU members have voted in favour of industrial actionMore than 60,000 employees voted yes to strike action.

Postal workers have voted in favour of a national strike, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) has confirmed.

More than 120,000 people were balloted and, of those who voted, 67 per cent declared their support for industrial action, which could lead members of the public to seek alternative parcel delivery services, such as those offered by Parcel2Go.

A series of regional strikes have brought the country's postal system to a standstill in recent weeks, with millions of letters and parcels left sat in Royal Mail sorting offices.

Postal workers voted three to one in favour of strike action, with more than 60,000 members of staff supporting the move.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said that Royal Mail employees have been left with little choice.

"It has come to this because of the management of Royal Mail and the government's refusal to engage the workforce on modernising the company," he stated.

The threat of a national strike has seen Amazon, one of the Royal Mail's biggest customers, put a contingency plan in place to use alternative parcel delivery services to ensure consumers receive their goods this Christmas.
