Postal workers have staged a protest at the South East Regional Labour Party Conference in Gillingham against plans to privatise the Royal Mail.Employees from the Royal Mail have been protesting against plans to part-privatise the organisation. The South East Regional Labour Party Conference in Gillingham was the scene for postal workers from across the area, together with other members of the Communication Workers Union, to stage a protest towards the government's plans.Any further protests or strikes by Royal Mail workers could result in people looking for alternative courier services in the future.Terry Jackson, the union's south-east regional secretary, said the group will "use every opportunity" to maintain the Keep the Post Public campaign at the forefront of people's attention. He added: "Normally we would have taken a stall and advertised in conference brochure, but we felt it was inappropriate at this time to give additional funds to the party while our members' livelihoods are under threat."Residents in Ellesmere have recently been voicing their anger at the planned closure of the town's Royal Mail postal delivery office, the Whitchurch Herald reported.Article Added: 20/04/2009 16:36:22
