The Communication Workers Union expects the part-privatisation of Royal Mail to lead to job cuts in the postal industry.

Plans to part-privatise Royal Mail could have a wide impact on the postal industry as a whole, it has been claimed.

According to the Communication Workers Union (CWU), the company's proposed status as a privatised firm means it would be looking to strip assets, boost profits and avoid an increase in services.

Because of this, such a move may lead many people to seek post office alternatives.

The union's spokesperson added: "We are expecting jobs to go down in the postal industry as modernisation continues, and as automation increases.

"That is a definite must for the sustainable future for the mail industry."

At the end of last month, the CWU conducted research that revealed 80 per cent of people believe the proposed sale of part of Royal Mail breaks a key election promise.
