Royal Mail national strike could hit Christmas post

The CWU has warned of further chaosIf a national strike takes place, the Christmas post will be in trouble.

A national strike at the Royal Mail could have serious repercussions for the Christmas post, a union leader has warned.

Martin Walsh, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) London representative, has claimed that the backlog of mail which has built up as a result of local strikes across the country is already so large it could affect postal deliveries in December.

The CWU recently balloted its members for a national strike and Mr Walsh warned that, unless the stand-off is resolved, there will be difficulties in getting people's mail to them in time for the festive period.

"Unless we get an agreement by the second or third week of October, the backlog is so big it will impact upon Christmas. Royal Mail has drafted in managers, but all they're trying to do is to clear mail that has been posted recently," he said.

In other news, David Frost, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, has described the Royal Mail as being in disarray and hit out at the organisation for planning to raise the cost of stamps.
