Industrial action could be on the horizon unless a deal is reached soon.
Sources at the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have warned that there could be a series of strikes unless a deal between its members and Royal Mail is agreed in the next ten days.
Last year the postal service was crippled by waves of industrial action over jobs, work and pay but the CWU signed a peace deal so Christmas parcel deliveries would not be affected, however, the deadline for an agreement to be reached expires next Friday, according to the Telegraph.
Both sides are cautiously optimistic that a long-lasting deal can be estanlished, although a source told the newspaper that things could quite easily take a turn for the worst.
"Royal Mail want to move to their 2010 plan. If they go ahead and impose changes, there will be industrial action," the insider added.
David Smith, director of operations at the Interactive Media in Retail Group, claims that the strike action last year drove many businesses into the arms of alternative parcel delivery providers, such as Parcel2Go.com.
