Retailers using parcel delivery and courier services could more fully embrace social media marketing and promotion in 2011.

More than half of businesses (57 per cent) are committed to increasing their spending on social media marketing, according to research by Strong Mail.

Many could move money away from other marketing channels to support social media, with the poll indicating that 43 per cent of business leaders intend to keep the total marketing budgets the same as in 2010.

Sixty five per cent of business leaders indicated that they would increase spending on email marketing, while 41 per cent will be increasing allocated budgets for search marketing.

Earlier this month, social brand agency Headstream indicated that social gaming is starting to be more widely used as a means of promoting products online.

The company's social media strategist, Tom Chapman, indicated that marketing via social gaming "will become more popular as recognisable brands try it out and achieve success".
