Online retail portal eBay is one of the most popular websites in the UK, according to new figures.

A new study has highlighted that eBay is one of the most visited websites in the UK.

Research by Nielsen found that the online shopping portal accounted for 4.1 per cent of time spent online by all internet users in Britain, which suggests many people have received parcel deliveries via the website.

It was found to be the fourth most popular web brand in the UK, behind other well-known sites including social networking site Facebook, MSN/Windows Live and Google.

Overall, the top ten brands were revealed to account for 45 per cent of time spent online in the UK and Alex Burmaster, communications director of Nielsen Online, said the study highlighted the web is "a complex and varied ecosystem".

He added: "I think most people would be surprised by just how much time is accounted for by a relatively few brands."

David Smith, director of operations at intelligence firm IMRG, recently claimed there is still a lot of growth potential for the online retail sector.
