Public 'against Royal Mail sale'

The public are against plans to part-privatise Royal Mail, it has been claimedA new poll has revealed that the majority of people across the UK are against the government's plans to part-privatise Royal Mail.

Around three-quarters of people in the UK do not support the government's plans to part-privatise Royal Mail, according to a new poll.

The research by ICM also revealed that 60 per cent believe the organisation needs to be reformed but should remain public, while 78 per cent claim selling a stake could be bad for taxpayers.

Over 80 per cent of people also think such a move would lead to an increase in prices, which could in turn lead many people to seek out Post Office alternatives.

Billy Hayes, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), said: "The public have got it right, the business needs to be reformed within the public sector giving it the freedom to invest but keeping it as a public service."

Last week, the CWU claimed that Royal Mail's recent profits announcement highlighted that the company can be modernised under public ownership.ADNFCR-2348-ID-19179146-ADNFCR
