Postal strike threat to swine flu vaccinations

Strikes are set to start tomorrowPlans to vaccinate 11 million people could be dirupted by postal strike.

The postal strikes set to take place tomorrow and Friday could have a serious impact on efforts to vaccinate millions of people against swine flu, the chief medical officer for England has warned.

Doctors and GPs are expected to take delivery of the vaccine in the next few days, but Sir Liam Donaldson has warned that industrial action could disrupt the whole process.

He stated that many surgeries plan to send out letters to those considered to be at the highest risk of contracting the virus and warns that a national postal strike is cause for concern, as it is the prime means for medics to contact people.

“We are a little bit worried about the postal strike because GPs send their letters out, letters of appointment, so we are working very hard to try and get round that, ensuring that people get their appointments on time,” he said.

Meanwhile, the advertising industry body ISBA has said its members will seek the services of alternative parcel delivery firms, which could include Parcel2Go.com, to make sure the postal strike causes minimum disruption to their businesses.
