Plymouth Crown Court hears how sorting officer manager allegedly took money from people's cards.
A Royal Mail sorting office manager ripped open envelopes to steal money from birthday cards, a court has been told.
Plymouth Crown Court heard that David Baker was allegedly caught on CCTV cameras picking up colourful envelopes and then making suspicious movements with his hands out of sight of the camera.
Kelly Scrivener, prosecuting, said that, on October 2nd, investigator Sarah Potterton saw Mr Baker apparently opening letters and then putting his hand in his pocket.
An observation team then monitored him for an hour before calling him into an office for questioning and showing him the letters which had been interfered with.
Mr Baker denies five charges of theft from postal packets on October 3rd last year and charges of interfering with postal packets on October 2nd and 3rd.
In other news, people in the village of Beeston, near Derham in Norfolk, will have to use Post Office alternatives from now on, as their local branch is to close down, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reports.
