Online sales fuel Shop Direct's soaring profits

Shop Direct's online presence has boosted salesOnline retail sales now accounts for 56 per cent of Shop Direct Group's total sales.

Shop Direct Group, which owns home shopping brands including Littlewoods and Kays, has revealed it expects 70 per cent of its sales to come via online retail by 2011.

The company has recently revealed an increase in profits of 182 per cent in the year up to April 30th and has claimed that the growth of internet shopping, which may require the use of parcel delivery services, has played a major part in this.

Online retail now accounts for 56 per cent of total sales, with a growth of 29 per cent in the 20 weeks since May.

Chief executive Mark Newton-Jones said that, while he is pleased with the figures, he is keeping his feet on the ground.

"We have continued to show growth in our online performance since May but are mindful of the tough economic climate we are facing and, as such, we remain cautious about the outlook for the remainder of 2009 and 2010," he stated.

Figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index recently revealed that UK shoppers spent £3.8 billion online in August 2009, which is an increase of 16 per cent compared to the same period last year.
