Consumers who shop online could take advantage of a number of discounts, according to an expert.

Web-based retailers are increasingly offering a number of discounts on products, an expert has claimed.

Mark Pearson, managing director of MyVoucherCodes, has claimed that the recession has turned the online shopping sector into a "cut-throat" industry as firms battle for custom.

He added that because of this, consumers are becoming savvy and seeking out the best deals, which could in turn up the number of parcel deliveries taking place across the UK.

Discussing discounts, he explained: "One company will offer one percentage and then someone will offer a little bit higher because it's all about getting the key sales in when they're actually struggling.

"It's been a great time for consumers to shop."

Earlier this year, a study published by Forrester Research found that 54 per cent of online retailers expect growth to slow in the next 12 months, despite four out of five claiming the web is best suited to withstand the downturn.
