Online retail spending 'on the increase'

Brits spending moreNew study shows online spending has increased among Brits.

Online retailers are experiencing an increase in consumer spending, according to new research.

The 2009 Consumer Confidence Report from Maximiles monitored the spending habits of two million Brits using its online shopping portal.

It found that spending on basic consumer electronics and appliances has increased by one per cent from July 2008 – which could result in online retailers upping their parcel delivery services needs to fulfil the increased orders.

Guy Keeling, managing director of Maximiles UK, said during the last downturn there was a "definite rise" in the number of "purchases of everyday consumer goods" when the "recession peaked, and a marked decrease in consumer confidence picked up in early 2002".

He added: "We are seeing this trend repeat today, indicating that general economic conditions are improving for many of our customers."

Recent research by Just Retirement found that 65 per cent of the over-50s now use online shopping websites, which could mean the parcel delivery needs of silver surfers has increased to ensure the safe passage of their purchases.
