New ops centre will strengthen PayPal's Irish links

PayPal logoeBay-owned online payments company PayPal brought good jobs news to the Irish city of Dundalk yesterday when it announced that it had chosen the city for the site of a new European operations centre.

When the site opens, in July, it will be the third major base in Ireland for parent company eBay. It is expected to create 1,000 new jobs.

The centre will handle all the company's customer service, financial operations, merchant services and sales and fraud prevention operations for the whole of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The importance of the deal to the Irish government could be seen in the fact that the country's Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Enda Kenny, visited Dundalk to jointly make the announcement.

PayPal spokesperson Louise Phelan said: "This is a great day for PayPal Ireland and a testament to the proven track record of our existing operation in Ireland."

The Irish Examiner reported that, once it is up and running, the new operations centre will handle communications with PayPal customers in 14 languages.
