National strikes expected on October 22nd

The CWU is giving the Royal Mail one last chanceIf the Royal Mail rejects the CWU's olive branch then strike action is inevitable.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has announced that national postal strikes will start on October 22nd unless the Royal Mail accepts a final proposal and reaches an amicable conclusion.

CWU deputy general secretary, Dave Ward, revealed that union bosses have been in contact with their Royal Mail counterparts in a bid to thrash out a deal which would see industrial action averted.

However, should the plea be rejected, then postal workers are expected to down tools from next Thursday, meaning members of the public will have to seek alternative parcel delivery solutions, such as those offered by Parcel2Go.

"We have, today, written to the Royal Mail making it clear that the CWU is ready to issue notice for a national strike, as voted for by three quarters of postal workers," Mr Ward stated.

Research by online shopping comparison site Kelkoo claims that a national postal strike will cost the economy more than £1.5 billion.
