Borders postmaster Mervyn Jones joined local MP Michael Moore at 10 Downing Street last week to deliver a petition.

The parcel delivery services provided by the Post Office network in the Borders region of Scotland are a vital part of the community and the loss of these services would be a severe blow to people, it has been claimed.

Borders postmaster Mervyn Jones joined local MP Michael Moore at 10 Downing Street last week to deliver a petition calling on ministers to safeguard the future of the network.

Mr Moore said there has been overwhelming support from the public to maintain the network and the parcel delivery services it provides, with many locals signing the petition.

"The strength of the response to this petition shows just how important the services provided by our local post office staff are to people around the Borders," he added.

Speaking in the House of Commons recently, Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael stated that daily parcel delivery services are crucial for those living in rural areas and must be maintained.
