More women taking advantage of online retail

More women are shopping onlineThe older generations with more disposable income are embracing online retail.

The influence of online retail is growing, with many consumers researching, as well as purchasing, goods via the internet, an industry figure has said.

David Smith, director of operations at the Interactive Media in Retail Group, told the Guardian that online retail activity has slowed recently because of the effects of the recession.

However, he states that increasing numbers of people are embracing the idea of buying goods online, with the older generations beginning to realise the convenience of it.

"More and more people are doing their research online, as well and comparing prices, so the influence of the internet is still growing. We are seeing more women shopping online and an older age group," Mr Smith told the newspaper.

Online retailer Asos recently revealed record pre-tax profits of £4.4 million in the year up to October.

The company also reported that the number of active customers on its site rose by 32 per cent year-on-year to 1.2 million.
