Millions face postal strike payment issues

Millions face the prospect of late paymentsNew survey shows millions of people will struggle to make their payments via cheque.

More than 6.6 million people in the UK face difficulties in making payments on time as a result of the impending postal strikes, new research has found, something which could encourage them to seek alternative parcel delivery services.

According to a study from Bacs Payment Schemes, of the 12.9 million adults who pay one or more bills by cheque, almost half rely on the postal service to meet the deadlines.

Michael Chambers, managing director of the firm, said regional strikes have already caused significant upheaval for many people and national action will compound the problem.

"Localised postal strikes up and down the country have already caused mayhem for consumers and businesses. Our figures show that nearly seven million people … are vulnerable to postal strike problems," he stated.

Meanwhile, a survey by IMRG has found that 77 per cent of its members believe that online retail will suffer in the run up to Christmas as a result of national postal strikes.
