Marshland Smeeth Post Office to close

Marshland Smeeth Post Office will close its doors Councillor Michael Pitcher, borough mayor, has backed the owners.

Residents in the Marshland Smeeth area of Norfolk may have to use Post Office alternatives for their parcel delivery needs from now on, as the local outlet is to close.

The Marshland Smeeth Post Office, run by John Davies, will close its doors after West Norfolk Council's Development Control Board approved plans to build a house on the site, the Lynn News reports.

After running the branch for 22 years, Mr Davies has decided that enough is enough, as he and his family have been subject to violent attacks and armed robberies during their tenure.

Councillor Michael Pitcher, borough mayor, told the newspaper that Mr Davies has the right to close the branch if he wishes, something which will mean many will need to use alternative parcel delivery providers, such as Parcel2Go.com.

"It seems the business is past its sell by date. I think the gentleman has got every right to apply for planning permission. He does not have to feel he has to provide a community service," he stated.

In other news, councillor Andrew Blackhouse has backed calls for Burniston Post Office to be kept open, the Scarborough Evening News reported.
