The government's efforts to save post offices in the UK were "inadequate", according to a new report.

A new report has claimed the government could have done more to save post offices across the UK from closure.

The publication from the Business and Enterprise Select Committee described the work of ministers on the issue as "inadequate", as a number failed to suggest ways to save many sites from closing.

It is believed that such closures across the UK have led many customers to seek post office alternatives for their parcel delivery needs.

The report said: "The committee is profoundly disappointed by the narrow focus of departmental concerns and the lack of attention to citizens' needs displayed in many of the answers to our questions about departments' use of the post office network."

Customers in London may have to seek post office alternatives over the next few days, as the Communication Workers Union has planned strike action in the city.
