A former employee of the Royal Mail has admitted stealing money from letters and parcels to pay his bills.

David Tosney's financial difficulties saw him go through various pieces of mail he was supposed to deliver in a bid to find cash, ChronicleLive.co.uk reports.

Appearing before Bedlington magistrates' court, the 32 year old admitted three counts of theft, which may encourage people to use the services of alternative parcel delivery providers.

Mr Tosney was caught after a customer contacted Royal Mail after a special delivery package failed to arrive, before she received the package minus the money, which had been enclosed.

"An examination of the envelope revealed that it had been scored down the edge and then sellotaped," the newspaper reports prosecutor Paul Heron as saying.

Plymouth Crown Court recently heard that David Baker, a sorting office manager, was allegedly caught on CCTV ripping open envelopes to steal money from birthday cards.
