The UK version of online auction site eBay is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its launch.

Online auction site eBay is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its launch in the UK by giving people an insight into its operations to date.

According to figures released by the company, transactions for over 960 million items have taken place on the site since its launch in 1999, with the first product ever sold being a three-track CD by The Scorpions.

Up to 123,000 British businesses now trade on eBay, which suggests that the number of parcel deliveries taking place through the site is in no danger of dropping.
Mark Lewis, managing director of eBay in the UK, said the site has "come a long way" in the past decade.

He added: "eBay.co.uk is still the favourite platform for British shoppers looking for great value and unrivalled choice, to earn some extra money on the side or to make their entrepreneurial dreams come true."

It was recently revealed that a chair used by JK Rowling during the writing of the first two Harry Potter books was on sale through eBay, reports Ananova.
