eBay tackling jewellery crime

eBay tackling jewellery crimeeBay is taking on the jewel thieves with a new partnership.

eBay buyers who like to order a parcel delivery of diamonds rings and ruby bracelet may be pleased to learn that the online auction site is taking on jewel thieves.

Teaming up with the US Jewelers' Security Alliance (JSA), eBay will support the efforts of law enforcement agencies such as the FBI in their efforts to stamp out organised jewellery crime.

eBay and the JSA will collaborate with the FBI Jewelry and Gem Initiative to identify crime rings responsible.

Paul Jones, global director of asset protection at eBay, said the partnership will work to help prosecute those who illegally obtain jewellery and abuse the online marketplace to sell the items.

JSA president John Kennedy said:"eBay has invested substantial resources and is making great progress in assisting law enforcement agencies and loss prevention professionals in tracking illegal behaviour."

The news comes to light as the trial of former Sierra Leone president Charles Taylor raises questions about the illegal trade of conflict diamonds.
