eBay squares up to fake clothing sellers

Counterfeit clothing manufacturers and merchants trying to sell their goods through eBay are being warned that the site is out to track them down.

The online marketplace has joined with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to bring back its 'You Can't Fake Fashion' campaign, which its co-ordinators say aims "to raise awareness against counterfeits and celebrate original design".

The campaign saw a successful launch last summer, and it is being restarted with the launch of a new collection of original tote bags from top designers, which are due to be shown for the first time today as part of a show for New York Fashion Week.

An eBay spokesperson commented: "With a designer handbag sold every 16 seconds, eBay is committed to providing a safe and secure online shopping experience and combating the sale of counterfeits."

And CFDA CEO, Steven Kolb, expressed the hope that "this bold campaign" will "raise awareness of our mutual dedication to the fight against fakes and emphasise the importance of original design".
