eBay proves recession buster

eBay proves recession bustereBay sees rise in UK businesses during recession.

The number of people running a business on eBay involving a parcel delivery has grown during the recession, it has been reported.

eBay has seen an 18 per cent rise in businesses registered with its UK site in the last two years, Internet Retailing reports.

Over 140,000 firms are now registered with eBay, an increase of 25,000 entrepreneurs selling on the site since September 2008.

The news comes after the Recruitment Society called for the government to do more to help entrepreneurs, such as large and small eBay businesses.

Laure Reillier, head of eBay seller proposition, commented: "We're seeing an increase in the number of large sellers who probably started their business on eBay and over time have increased turnover, recruited staff and become more and more professional."

The Recruitment Society chairman Steve Huxham, however, warned that the employers will need more incentives.

He believes that the measures outlined in the Budget last month were positive, but feels that businesses will need to see what wider government policy is like.

"One small step on its own isn't going to give entrepreneurs enough confidence to start employing people again," he explained.
