eBay aims to replace Google for search

eBay aims to replace Google for searcheBay has grand ambitions for mobile commerce.

Shoppers have only recently been able to browse, buy and arrange parcel delivery from eBay using their mobile phones.

Already it seems, however, that there is no end to where eBay can go in terms of m-commerce.

Speaking to PC World, head of mobile at eBay Steve Yankovich said he wants to see the online auction site replace Google as the search tool of choice when buying goods online or offline.

He told the publication: "I want to replace Google as the de facto 'Where do I start?'"

"I think the big prize here is to garner a large share of brick-and-mortar retail."

Mr Yankovich also explained that the firm's RedLaser barcode scanning technology for mobile apps may be improved and expanded to allow it to work without a barcode by looking at objects shape, size and colour.

It seems that eBay is keen to get ahead with m-commerce early to take advantage of the sector's growth.

M-commerce transactions will be worth $1 trillion (£660 billion) globally by the year 2014, according to IE Market Research.
