EA relax rules on battery take-back schemes

Take-back schemes are emerging as a popular way to dispose of batteriesParcel deliveries of batteries being sent as part of a take-back scheme could be affected by regulation changes from the Environment Agency.

The Environment Agency (EA) has amended its position on sending batteries through the post as part of green waste take-back schemes.

In news which could impact on some parcel deliveries, the organisation has confirmed that people using such initiatives no longer have to include a transfer note when sending portable batteries for recycling through courier services, as long as they are kept in a sealed container.

This is because the EA has claimed the items pose a "low environmental risk" and collections also play an important part in recovering such products.

However, it was also acknowledged that current regulations may "inhibit" the schemes.

The EA is the biggest organisation in England and Wales devoted to protecting and improving the area's environment.

It currently has up to 12,000 members of staff and a budget of close to £900 million.ADNFCR-2348-ID-19177118-ADNFCR
