Richard Laws took cards and parcels to help pay his debts.
An undercover investigation by Royal Mail caught out a worker who had been stealing packages from a sorting office in Lincolnshire.
Richard Laws, who had debts of £43,000, took greetings cards, CDs and DVDs, thisislincolnshire.co.uk reported, something which may encourage others to use Post Office alternatives in the future.
A series of complaints from the public that parcels had not been delivered alerted suspicion and bosses set up a surveillance operation at the city depot.
Mr Laws was given a nine-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, the news provider added.
He has also agreed to pay back £1 a month on each of the cards he owes money on.
David Tosney, a former Royal Mail employee, recently admitted at Bedlington magistrates' court that he stole money from letters and bills to pay his debts, ChronicleLive.co.uk reported, which may encourage members of the public to use Post Office alternatives in the future.
