DHL assists Guatemalan flood relief efforts

DHL volunteers are manning a sorting line in a Guatemala.DHL has used its logistical expertise to send aid to Guatemala.

Parcel delivery firm DHL has done its bit to help the people of Guatemala, just days after an erupting volcano and a tropical storm caused devastation to the country.

DHL deployed 20 trained volunteers from its 450 employees in Guatemala to La Aurora Airport, where they are sorting and inventorying donated goods.

Rainer Wend, executive vice-president for public policy and responsibility at DHL, said it is imperative that people hit by the disaster receive essential items like food, water and aid material as swiftly as they can.

"I am therefore glad that we have been asked by the Guatemalan government to bring in our logistics expertise at the main airport to help manage incoming goods and so make the relief efforts run as quickly as possible," he added.

Guatemala City has also been disrupted by the appearance of a "super sinkhole" in recent days, which has swallowed a three-storey building and part of a road.
