December was a good month for online retail.
Online retail sales slowed in January, new figures have shown, although an industry expert believes these should be viewed in context.
According to the Interactive Media in Retail Group's (IMRG's) Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, last month saw the lowest annual growth rates in the history of the index.
However, Chris Webster, vice president of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said online retail remains attractive to consumers, with December witnessing bumper sales of goods online.
"While annual growth for e-retail was slow in January, we should factor in the fact that December was a very strong month for the industry. Last January, e-retailers' sales were buoyed up by heavy discounting and promotions," he added.
The British Population Survey recently found that nearly 59 per cent of those aged between 45 and 54 purchased good over the internet in the final quarter of last year.
