High street retailer Debenhams has launched a new year-round online clearance store due to a change in customer demand.

High street fashion retailer has opened a new online clearance store, it has been reported.

Debenhams, which runs 153 retail outlets across the UK and Ireland, has launched a permanent year-round online clearance store.

The new site will offer shoppers items in the same categories as on the retailer's main online store and could lead to an increase in UK parcel delivery to fulfil orders from the site.

It has been launched to allow the firm to clear stock effectively, according to the retailer.

David Worby, head of Debenhams Direct, told Retail Week the new online clearance store was launched due to a "change in shopper behaviour".

He added: "The brand has gained market share in tough times. The online offer is mapping to the ongoing desire for our products."

A recent study by Hitwise fund that Debenhams had experienced a 40.2 per cent increase in traffic to its online store.
