MP Alistair Carmichael says a daily service must be maintained.Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has claimed it is crucial that daily parcel delivery services remain in the area.Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Carmichael warned that the increasing number of licences issued for door-to-door delivery could see people in more isolated area suffer from inconsistent mail services.He told the house during Business, Innovation and Skills Questions that it is imperative action is taken to safeguard parcel delivery services in rural areas.In response, minister of state for business Pat McFadden said: "We are determined to keep the universal services, it's an important part of the social glue of the nation."Meanwhile, a deal between the Communication Workers Union and Royal Mail bosses is close to being struck.Sky News business correspondent Joel Hills recently stated that while there are still some areas where both sides are in disagreement, there is enough common ground to get things moving forward.Posted by Lucy PritchardArticle Added: 05/03/2010 09:38:51
