Online retailers were extremely busy this week, with Monday expected to have been the biggest online shopping day of the year.

Amazon told the BBC that it was seeing lots of customers logging on who will now be eagerly awaiting their parcel delivery, adding that Susan Boyle's album and Harry Potter DVDs are selling well.

The first Monday in December is always expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year as people want to ensure they get their parcel delivery by Christmas.

This year £350 million of sales were expected on December 7th, although no official totals have been released. Last year saw £320 million spent.

Recent figures from the British Retail Consortium found that online, mail order and phone sales rose by 17 per cent in November when compared with the same month a year ago.

The figures also showed that sales were 18 per cent higher than October as people start to buy their Christmas presents.
