CWU continues campaign over Royal Mail plans

The CWU is taking its campaign against the government's plans for Royal Mail to the East of EnglandThe Communication Workers Union has visited the East of England in its efforts to campaign against the government's plans for Royal Mail.

A campaign against the proposed part-privatisation of Royal Mail is heading to the East of England this week.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is taking a giant 20-foot postbox to areas including Cambridge, Norwich and Bedford to encourage the public to sign a petition against the proposed part-privatisation of the organisation.

Paul Moffatt, the eastern regional secretary for the union, suggested that the proposal could lead many people to seek post office alternatives.

He added: "Privatisation would inevitably lead to higher stamp prices, lower wages and the possibility of further post office closures, job losses and service reductions for unprofitable rural areas."

Business secretary Lord Mandelson recently told the Financial Times that he expects the proposed sale of a stake in Royal Mail to be delayed, possibly until after the House of Commons' summer break next month.
