Post office services in a village shop in Cumbria have been closed, according to a report.

A village shop in Cumbria is no longer operating post office services, it has been confirmed.

According to a report in the Cumberland News, the outlet in Gilsland has been replaced with an outreach service that will run for nine hours a week at the village hall.

The move, which could see a number of people seek post office alternatives, has made postmistress Elsie McLaughlin concerned for the future of the village shop.

She explained: "The shop and post office went hand-in-hand with one another and made it viable. We will continue to run, and try our very best to maintain, the only shop in the village."

It was recently confirmed that a post office in Harrow-on-the-Hill is to close.

According to the Harrow Times, talks on the future of the site have broken down due to financial demands.
