Local school children recently cut the ribbon to officially open the new Post Office on Worle High Street in Weston-Super-Mare.

Residents in the area had feared that parcel delivery services would disappear as rumours gathered pace about the local outlet closing, the Weston and Somerset Mercury reported.

Several local businesses voiced their support to keep the Post Office open and safeguard the services the community relies on.

Eventually, the Co-operative chain came to the rescue as part of its £1.56 billion purchase of Somerfield shops, the newspaper added.

The new branch opened last week as part of a £350,000 conversion of a former supermarket, with youngsters from Mendip Green First School officially opening the outlet.

Parcel delivery services in the Dorset town of Lyme Regis were recently secured after the sale of the building housing the local Post Office meant the outlet would remain open for the foreseeable future, Devon 24 reported.
