Many firms are not switched onto the growing social media trend, it is claimed.
Parcel delivery firms that do not embrace social media - sites such as Facebook and Twitter - may be in for a big surprise, it has been claimed.
The growing trend of social media "happens to businesses whether they like it or not", according to digital marketing agency Bigmouthmedia.
Andrew Girdwood, head of strategy at the firm, believes that "social media is everything", if it is defined simply as people having conversations about a brand online.
He explained: "The more successful a campaign, the more social it is, so social media is incredibly important."
"The challenge is for brands to realise that and start working in that social way."
Mr Girdwood went to say that many brands are "switched on" to social media, while others remain cautious.
Facebook has recently launched a new application called 'Places', which allows users to see where there friends are at any given moment and lists local businesses and attractions.
