Browsing goes social with RockMelt

Browsing goes social with RockMeltRockMelt takes social media to browsing.

Browsing for parcel delivery options on the Web is going to take a social twist after RockMelt unveiled its new eponymous browser.

The firm, which was set up by Marc Andreesen and his cohorts from Netscape, is keen to push some of the latest Web 2.0 technology into the world of browsing.

Built around Chromium, the open source project behind Google's Chrome browser, RockMelt promises to be fast, stable and secure.

"Had we known about Facebook and Twitter and Google back in '92 or '93, we would have built them into the [Netscape] browser," Mr Andreessen told the New York Times.

"This is an opportunity to go back and do it right."

The key features making RockMelt stand out are two panels next to the main browsing window, one showing the user's friends, the other their favourite social sites.

Cisco recently launched a new application that allows businesses to track and respond to what is being said about them on social media sites.
