Blackburn mail theft 'will distress many people'

Letters were stolen on SaturdayLothian and Borders Police are appealing for help.

A Royal Mail trolley and two bags were stolen in the West Lothian town of Blackburn on Saturday, something which will distress members of the public who could have lost important items.

Inspector Michaela Kerr, from Lothian and Borders Police, claimed that many of the items taken by the thief will be of little value to him, but will be to those who were expecting them.

A man wearing tracksuit trousers and a black long-sleeved top was seen running off with letters and packages towards the Mill Shopping Centre.

Inspector Kerr called on the members of the community to come forward with any information they have.

"Crimes such as this carry many victims; people in the community who will not receive their mail will result in inconvenience and unnecessary distress. This is particularly galling when we know most of the letters will be of no value to the suspect and will end up being discarded," she added.

John Knight, a postman from Manchester, was recently given a six-month suspended prison sentence after stealing from letters and parcels to help reduce his debts, the Manchester Evening News reported.
