Couples are paying for their own weddings, it seems.

Couples wanting to order a parcel delivery of all the clothes and accessories for their big day on eBay may find they are not alone.

It seems that more people than ever are paying for their weddings, new figures show.

A survey of 5,000 married adults for The Wedding Inbox revealed fewer than one in five fathers foots the bill for their daughter's wedding.

Nowadays, couples pay for it all themselves or share the cost between families.

Wedding Ideas magazine editor Rachel Morgan explained that people are saving up for the occasion rather than getting into debt.

"Modern couples I think pay for the majority of the day themselves and parents pay for one element of it – say the food or the drink," she said.

"Or if they want a wow factor – they might say 'Can you buy us the fireworks?"

The survey also revealed fewer than one in six grooms ask the bride's father for permission for her hand in marriage.
